You Can't Take it With You
Frank Capra's most successful comedies are time criticised in favour of being too sentimental. Beneath that sugar coating come what may, there's often a deeper suspense. More than merely championing the guy on the path to elation, his film's worldview can be far downwards cynical, seeing the separate as a cipher in the gears of big vigour, a fate which at best the stars (notably Jimmy Stewart) ultimately manage to escape here.
