World Trade Center
Kenneth TuranIt's taken the Hollywood system five years to come up with a major motion picture about what happened at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, but if you think that time was used for thoughtful introspection and careful analysis about the best way to approach those agonizing and unprecedented events, you just don't know Hollywood.
What that time has gone into instead is making the story of Sept. 11 fit as closely as possible into the business-as-usual norms of sentimental studio moviemaking. The problem is not so much that World Trade Center is an attempt to make a feel-good movie about a ghastly situation, it's that the result feels forced, manufactured and largely ??? but not entirely ??? unconvincing.
For the reality of what took place...
9/11
This film focuses on two police who risked their lives in the terrible events of the Twin Towers - 9/11. Although this film only follows two police cops into the Twin Towers on that fateful day, it is enough to realise how bad that day was to the lives of many people in New York and around the world. The film title does assume that it will tell the tale of the whole horrible event and show you what happened to many people not just 2 on that day, so I suppose a better title for the film could have been thought of, but the drama was very good from the main actors' and they delivered it well. 3 stars for effort.
Unmoving and cliched
Oliver Stone is not known for making subtle films but even by his standards this is bombastic and cliched. Some truly dreadful moments - especially in the flashback scenes and any scene featuring the marine where the script is toe curling. He evens resorts to visions of Jesus and the final scenes where Stone tries to make links between 9/11 and Iraq is unforgiveable. The only reason to see this film is for the terrific sound effects when the buildings collapse. If you want to see a moving film about the tragedy and heroism of that terrible day see Flight 93.
