Wolf Creek
Kevin CrustAn initially promising horror film that turns exploitive, Wolf Creek fails to deliver the requisite payoff considering its leisurely pace. It bears the almost always dubious label "based on true events," and details the unfortunate fate that befalls two young British women, Liz (Cassandra Magrath) and Kristy (Kestie Morassi), visiting Australia, and the local bloke, Ben (Nathan Phillips), they hook up with for a road trip across the inhospitable outback.
Writer-director Greg McLean admirably attempts to breathe some life into the genre by taking his time to get to the gore, but rather than yielding interesting characters it merely deflates the suspense. The ambling first half follows the trio as they make their way to isolated Wolf Creek Crater, and though...
Wolf Creek
Dennis HarveyHarrowing and unpleasant, Aussie horror pic Wolf Creek invites comparisons to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre not just for content, but because both are based -- albeit faintly -- on real-life serial murder cases. Dimension Films caused a stir by buying U.S. rights, supposedly sight-unseen, for $3.5 million weeks before the pic's Sundance bow. They should have little trouble scaring up a profit on that investment, particularly if pic is sold as a more conventional genre item than it really is. Impressive first feature for writer-director-producer Greg Mclean is a more gruesome downer than giddy thrill ride, however, which could limit word-of-mouth and repeat-biz.
After too many bits of ominous explanatory text, college-aged pals Ben (Nathan Phillips), Liz (C...
"Head-On-A-Stick!" - Sick.
Nasty and unsettling, brutal and gut-wrenching, this is a modern horror tale that truly shocks. The dubious tag of based on a true story is used but this is actually based on an amalgamation of several Australian true accounts of murder in the Outback. The deliberate slow build up to introduce the characters just makes the torture and murder scenes more powerful when they finally arrive. This is no Hollywood film. There are no throwaway puns in this. Played dead straight this is a most convincing horror tale of how twisted someone can be when there is no law and order to keep them in check.
The basic plot has three backpackers finding terror at the hands of a psychopath at the end of an Outback excursion. The young cast are quite able, but it is veteran actor John Jarritt who really...
