What Just Happened?
Carina ChocanoIt's not until the last few minutes of What Just Happened that the film's title is posed as a question, not by the protagonist but by his ex-wife. She doesn't get a straight answer, as, presumably, she never has. Her former husband is a Hollywood producer.
In that it tends to confirm all the usual stereotypes about Hollywood, you could say that there are no surprises in Barry Levinson's funny, sly and highly stress-inducing movie about two crazy weeks in the life of a successful producer. What Just Happened is a fictionalized adaptation of the autobiography of veteran producer Art Linson, who also wrote the screenplay.
Briskly, almost curtly directed by Levinson, it stars a low-key, even-keel and surprisingly affable Robert De Nir...
What just happened indeed
I went along to see What Just Happened, which was probably the reaction of most of the audience. I've thought about it quite a bit and still don't really know what to make of it. I'm not sure at all that the makers knew what kind of film they were making. I thought the tone was all over the place, that the pacing was wildly erratic - in fact I think there's two different films in there trying to get out. I realise what they were trying to do, to make a film that shows someone with an incredibly busy life, full of stresses, trying to cope but for me it didn't work. For example, one of the first things he did was pick his two young kids, from his first wife, and take them to school. We never saw them or his first wife again. There wasn't even a reference to them in th...

What Just Happened?
Todd McCarthyHollywood is skewered, but with a degree of benevolent indulgence, in What Just Happened? This is scarcely the first time prominent industry insiders have turned their lenses on their own kind to hold them up to public scrutiny, even ridicule, and in the annals of pictures about the film capital, writer-producer Art Linson and director Barry Levinson's rates somewhere in the midrange, both in quality and viciousness. A story very much by, about and for middle-aged men, and with the commercial limitations that implies, this intermittently amusing outing is graced by one of Robert De Niro's more engaging performances of recent vintage. Based on Linson's 2002 book about the vicissitudes of producing pictures in contempo Tinseltown, his script offers none-...
