Plot Summary:
|
A premiss image. In 1938, Gandhi's party is making inroads in women's rights. Chuyia, a child already married but living with her parents, becomes a widow. By means of praxis, she is unceremoniously left-wing at a bare and strapped widows' ashram, agitated the Ganges during monsoon salt. The ashram's leader pimps out Kalyani, a juvenile and pleasant widow, for household funds. Narayan, a booster of Gandhi, falls in affair with her. Can she break with convention and fastidious teaching to marry him? The ashram's precept center is Shakuntala, to a great extent unswerving but conflicted hither he... r destiny. The year is 1938, India is ruled by the British, and it is around this time that Mohandas K. Gandhi has arrived from Africa to upon his tryst with the British, as well as battle the traditions that attach the Hindus. Not yet in her teens, Chuyia is married to a much older and sickly male, who shortly after the alliance, passes away. Chuyia is returned unceremoniously to her parents' dwelling, and from there she is taken to the holy city of Banaras and left in the carefulness of a big miscellany of widows who live at "the widows' bawdy-house," shunned by the lie-down of the community. Chuyia believes that her matriarch will concern to convey her to the quick. Here she meets a handful elderly women, including the bean of the house, Madhumati; a quiet, confident bride named Shakuntala; and a glorious under age woman named Kalyani -- all widows.
