Plot Summary:
|
Federal proxy Elliot Ness assembles a familiar gang of mob fighters to succeed Chicago crime boss Al Capone to justice using unconventional means during the mob wars of the 1920s. This fictionalized account of the stoppage of Al Capone is heavy on sophistication and gunfire. The end shootout combines a baby carriage and stairs with a concur to Eisenstein's _The Battleship Potemkin_.

Another milestone marking the decline of De Palma. The Untouchables is a perfectly adequate Hollywood movie, even classy and entertaining at times, but, despite De Palma's brilliant set piece which reworks the Odessa steps sequence from Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin, this is disappointing stuff considering he's the director of Blow Out and Body Double.

While the premise provides plentifulness of opportunities for Mamet's able book theme to take a fancy to, a four of sorry performances, peculiarly De Niro's Capone, dampen the excited spirits of the film.
