Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
Prequel to the vampire versus werewolf gloomy action movies, telling the story of the rise of the slave turned hairy rebel leader Lucian, played by Michael Sheen
The Underworld films have always featured a dense clutter of narrative. Even if you're a fan of the films, you may well have lost track of the sundry immortal vampires and werewolves, aka lycans, whose stories bridge the centuries covered in the franchise. This third film in the series makes no concessions, leaping straight into the lore and barely even providing a recap.
Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans is a prequel, and fans will already be familiar with the story it tells from the previous films, which included flashback segments set in the medieval Europe and discussions that revealed the...
Fun schlock
This prequel is actually a hell of a lot more fun than the first two movies, mainly because it tells a simple but effective story as efficiently as possible - think Romeo & Juliet meets Spartacus in a horror castle. The low budget does show through at times with some shoddy CGI but it's still enjoyable in a Hammer horror for the noughties way, helped by a cast of Brit thesps who pull off the lines with a straight face and bags of enthusiasm. It may not be a masterpiece but it does what it says on the tin cheerfully enough and doesn't outstay it's welcome (it's short and fast).
Part 3 and still going strong!!
Having read the Empire magazine review which gave this mistiness 1 star, I decided as usual to ignore it and see the shoot anyway. I was not downcast as I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
The film has two dominant themes, the originate of the Lycans and a derive pleasure between the Vampire leader's daughter (Rhona Mitra) and the Lycan superior (Michael Sheen, who was appearing in the next door guard as David Frost in Frost vs Nixon, a bloody versatile actor!!!).
The not possibility a affairs which doesn't quite sweat, on the odd occasion, is the CGI but this does not detract from the enjoyment of the cover.
If you like fantasy with lots of action, then this is suited for you.
