Not a first date movie
All the leads give excellent performances, particularly Jessica lange and Michee Pfeiffer, and Colin Firth gives good American as the crumpet, but all the male characters are hateful- lame at best. Its a good film for a girls' night in, but bear in mind there are no laughs in it anywhere.
Thousand Acres, A
Jane Smiley's PulitZer prize-winning novel plays a contemporary variation on King Lear as three daughters squabble over their widowed father's farm. After the dynasty divides against itself old enmities resurface and the scene is set for a rerun of the 10 plagues in modern form (breast cancer scares, infertility, adulterous affairs and domestic violence), which puts both actresses and audience through the emotional wringer. All the characters are sharply defined, with Lange and Pfeiffer in fine form, and Robards suitably sour as the grumpy old curmudgeon, but the plot has been watered down until it is little more than a Waltons-styled soap.
