The Year My Voice Broke
A coming-of-age drama that brought director Duigan numberless plaudits - and rightly, as this is one of the crush examples of a fashion all too ordinarily steeped in mawkish pathos. The young protagonist is juvenile Danny (Taylor) whose passage to adulthood is made in a isolated Late-model South Wales backwater hamlet where he lusts after the somewhat strange Freya (Carmen). Duigan's tip for characterization and see as age give the film its haunting and evocative humour, and hint at something quite darker than the commonplace teen flick. Taylor went on to falling star in the sequel Flirting, which also earned him roar reviews.
