Plot Summary:
|
Driving South to Richmond, Washington Post commentator John Klein (Richard Gere) finds himself unexpectedly operating sour course--in the small village of Point Pleasant, West Virginia--knocking on the door of Gordon and Denise Smallwood (Tom Patton and Lucinda Jenney). Gordon is irate. This is the third gloaming in a row that Klein has knocked on his door at 2 a.m. When Sgt. Connie Parker (Laura Linney) arrives to consider, Klein discovers this is just a certain of scads unusual events occurring in the community. With Parker's help, Klein investigates. In due course, he becomes convinced that some disaster is about to be brought to someone's attention. ... In THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, scriptwriter Richard Hatem and boss Mark Pellington deport oneself upon the strange events that reportedly occurred in Point Pleasant in the mid-1960s. As in ARLINGTON Technique, Pellington makes grievous use of a uneasy, prowling camera and ominous untroubled effects provided sooner than sound editor Kelly Cabral, perceptive mixer Pud Cusack (she also worked on ARLINGTON Boulevard), and well-built architect Claude Letessier. Pellington gets fine performances from Gere, Linney, Patton, Alan Bates as a paranormal investigator, and Debra Messing--astounding in the too-small role of Klein's wife--ahead of he produces a spectacular final sequence.
