Plot Summary:
|
Senator Ranse Stoddard returns to the city of Shinbone in the Wild West, to open to to the burial of his friend, Tom Doniphon. To a journalist, who's wondering what the senator is doing in Shinbone, he tells how his career started as "the chap who swallow Unfettered Valance". As a counselor-at-law he came to Shinbone to bring law and knighthood a neat to the west nearby means of law books. When the stagecoach is held up by outlaws, he is savagely beaten through Liberty Valance. He survives the jump and is nursed via his future wife, Hallie. Hallie is being wooed by way of a local rancher, Tom... Doniphon. Ranse teaches the people of Shinbone to read and write, all the while bothersome to discover a way of bringing Valance to justice. He in fine takes up a gun and faces Valance in a ominous shootout...

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
At the height of the JFK disputation, filmmaker and celebrity paranoiac Oliver Stone joked that his next silent picture would be 'The Men Who Rule the roost Liberty Valance'. Although not famous for his sense of wit, Stone should be congratulated coming up with a wordplay that works on a couple of levels, since not even the over of an elaborate cabal would justify a remake of John Ford's unimpeachable image.
