Ralph Baksi's version from 1978. By 1978, Tolkien's book had gone through almost 50 printings and the cult classic was moving strongly into the mainstream. Prof Tolkien's academic credentials are w/o equal. "Beowulf: the Monsters and the Critics" essay in 1936 is credited with establishing the Beowulf saga as literature rather than folklore. Most of us believed that animation was the only way to make a movie of LotR and looked forward to Bakshi's RotoScope animation aide to make it possible. The film was scripted by Peter S. Beagle ("The Last Unicorn") and Beagle, to his credit, lifts dialog straight from the book where possible. These are the good things. While, at the time, Bakshi was severely criticized for his liberties with the book. This is and was unfair. The book is almost 2,00 pages and a movie cannot be that detailed. He was also criticized for the RotoScope and an unsuccessful blending of "real" and "animated." In general, this is warranted. Ultimately, Peter Jackson did the book well, and, if you believe that CGI is animation, we were right in the 1970's. Good for fans.
