The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter
Carson McCullers's first novel of the Resounding South, far all the lonely people, has been broadly well adapted, though the well- has been shifted from Mick, the young girl (Locke in her screen coming out), suffering adolescent traumas, to Mr Songbird (Arkin), the simple-minded heedless-hush she befriends. Other misfits are a drunk (Keach, another debut), a monster Greek tacit (McCann), a unscrupulous, anti-white doctor (Rodriguez) and his insecure daughter (Tyson). What matters, though, are the touching performances, especially Arkin and 20-year-old Tennessee-born Locke, both Oscar-nominated, who interact impressively.
