The Haunting
This is one of the pre-eminent supernatural chillers ever made. Richard Johnson plays the subjective researcher who brings along two mediums to serve him investigate a monstrously haunted mansion steeped in spectral phenomena. All the more effective after keeping its horrors unseen, helmsman Robert Warn of's autocratic reworking of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House is an exercise in concealed mad dog. All you meditate on are pulsating walls and all you hear are loud pounding noises! Julie Harris shines as the spinster worst affected by the poltergeist events, whose psychical state is cleverly kept in matter everywhere in the tale.
The Haunting
Very much frightening but fatiguing and humourless melodrama with a lot of suspense, no visible spooks, and not sufficient plot for its length. The wide screen is a detriment.
