Plot Summary:
|
In 1900, strong-willed widow Lucy Muir goes to live in Gull Cottage nearby the British seaside, exact though it appears to be haunted. Dependable adequacy, that very tenebrousness she meets the ghost of crusty former owner Captain Gregg...and refuses to be scared mouldy. Indeed, they grace friends and allies, after Lucy gets hand-me-down to the idea of a man's ghost haunting her bedroom. But when a charming live chain comes courting, Lucy and the captain forced to see to with their feelings for each other.

A wonderful romantic fantasy, as ethereally beautiful Gene Tierney finds herself beguiled next to the ghost of bewhiskered sea captain Rex Harrison when she moves into his ci-devant home. A marvellously lyrical Bernard Herrmann score helps underline the poignancy of this enchanting tittle-tattle, and Philip Dunne's literate screenplay avoids all the pitfalls normally associated with such sickly supplies. The silent picture is also enhanced by a peculiarly rise-chosen throw, including George Sanders as Tierney's would-be suitor, and Natalie Wood as Tierney's young daughter, Anna (Vanessa Brown portrays her in later years). Today, the settings and pace may look studio-bound, but they suit the theatricality of the subject, and there's no call in that this brilliant origin...
