Texas Ranger Jake Cutter arrests gambler Paul Regretfulness, but before long finds himself teamed with his detainee in an private venture to defeat a ensemble of arms merchants and thieves known as Comancheros.
A unbelievable swan song for Casablanca director Michael Curtiz, who died after completing this film. Just so, much of this comely western was actually directed near star John Wayne, in tandem with second unit director Escarpment Lyons. The climb is substantial, and Curtiz fills the wide CinemaScope vistas with rip-roaring functioning. The Duke dominates the movie, but there's also perk up prop from Stuart Whitman as gambler Paul Regret, who's a focal morality for the whole matter. The score is unified of Elmer Bernstein's best and most elegiac, and there's a terrific star-edifice performance from Lee Marvin. A arrogantly hit in its age, this is the divide of sprawling western that died, alas, with its hero.
Tractable-going, cheerfully violent Western with full of pep roughhouse sequences.
