The Captain's Paradise
Alec Coppel received an Oscar nomination in the interest the firsthand fable of this self-satisfied British comedy, in which bigamy is laughed off as the ideal solution to the sociosexual vacillation of an visibly charming sea captain. Called upon to do little more than vegetate in Gibraltar and tango hither Tangier, Alec Guinness cruises through this lightweight prototype, which charts an even more foreseeable course than the ferry he commands. Yvonne De Carlo confuses ruckus with exoticism, but Celia Johnson is conspicuous as the mouse the missis who discovers, in the bazaars of North Africa, that there is more to sparkle than warming slippers.
