Plot Summary:
|
Brennan Huff (Purposefulness Ferrell) and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) comprise at one apparatus in general: they are both lazy, out of a job leeches who still survive with their parents. When Brennan's take care of and Dale's father marry and move in together, it turns the overgrown boys' world upside down. Their insane rivalry and narcissism pull the new kindred alone, forcing them to act on together to reunite their parents.

Produced by Apatow and directed by McKay, who co-wrote the script with Ferrell, Step Brothers is not a retread so much as a reduction, stripping away the magical pretext of Elf and the period trappings of Anchorman to get to the heart of the thriving man-boy genre. It's a shame, in a way. Around the time Will Ferrell made Stranger Than Fiction it seemed quite possible that the man who'd made it big on the back of 'big' comedy might turn out to be a gifted straight actor. But rather than making a Jim Carrey-esque transformation, Ferrell seems to have taken one look at the mixed reaction Marc Forster's film received and dashed off to the safety of broad sports spoofs.
With Step Brothers we can report that Ferrell has drawn a line under the sports pictures, at least for the time being. And in saying hello to John C Reilly again, he proves he has the good sense to acknowledge what ...
