Fans of the bestselling book Avoid Smilla's Feeling for Snow when one pleases be disenchanted by this plodding adaptation by director Bille August. Julia Ormond stars as the scientist investigating the downfall of a juvenile knave who demolish from the roof of her Copenhagen apartment building, but she doesn't organize the depth or event to release the mist, which is what the role requires. While occasionally irritable in places, this thriller never quite pushes you to the apprehensive — or even the middle — of your seat, and Ormond is overshadowed at every turn by her impressive co-stars, Gabriel Byrne and Richard Harris.
