Plot Summary:
|
A young woman helping care for an invalid in New Orleans finds herself caught in the stomach of ghoulish prospering-ons centered on all sides a clique of Hoodoo practitioners. (Hoodoo is not Voodoo, it's of a different culture. Voodoo is Haitian while Hoodoo is an one-time African American voodoo that just like Voodoo only works if you believe in it.)

Skeleton Key, The
Supernatural yarn set in an old house in the swamps near New Orleans. Kate Hudson stars as a care worker who becomes suspicious of her new employer, played by Gena Rowlands
New Orleans, Louisiana, the bayous. These parts of America have such an evocative reputation they're an ideal setting for stories that are a bit creepy, or weird, or just plain sweaty. The Skeleton Key is prime Southern Gothic. It's not an especially great film, but it does take advantage of the setting effectively. Kate Hudson's protagonist Caroline, a care worker, becomes embroiled in a scenario that involves a big ol' house, a dark history, hoodoo (magic that blends African, European and Native American beliefs into something that supposedly "can't hurt you if you don't believe in it"), ...
Skeleton Key, The
Mike ClarkWho would have guessed that the summer's most invincible villain would be a sweet little old lady who graciously serves tea and makes a mean gumbo?

This born-on-the-bayou thriller stars Gena Rowlands as the unbeatable foe and Kate Hudson as a hospice worker caring for Rowlands' dying husband (John Hurt).
The setting is alluring: a ramshackle, 30-room plantation house set amid swampland and mossy willows. The stately manse has seen better days and played host to several mysterious inhabitants. This is essentially a haunted-house horror flick that starts off with effectively eerie scenes ...
Skeleton Key, The
Up to date Orleans, Louisiana, the bayous. These parts of America have such an evocative reputation they're an ideal stage set into stories that are a trace creepy, or weird, or just plain sweaty. The Skeleton Key is prime Southern Gothic. It's not an especially great smokescreen, but it does take advantage of the context effectively. Kate Hudson's leading role Caroline, a care worker, becomes embroiled in a plot that involves a consequential ol' council, a jet-black report, hoodoo (miraculous that blends African, European and National American beliefs into something that allegedly "can't hurt you if you don't imagine in it"), rising swamp waters and plenty of trees swathed in epiphytes. Sickened by the need of compassion to be set up in the Strange Orleans O...
