Still spectacular
The Silence Of The Lambs has become a legend among moviegoers as on of those films that you absolutely must see. It won the Oscar for best picture when it was released and it is easy to see why.
We are presented with the tale of Clarice Starling a fledgling agent at the FBI. She is tasked with finding a serial killer who has garnered the alias Buffalo Bill. To do this she must enlist the help of one Hannibal Lecter played brilliantly by Anthony Hopkins.
What sets this film apart from the average serial killer slasher flick is the dynamic that develops between the two. Hopkins is very sedate in his performance and oozes danger while appearing calm. We as the audience identify with starling and are both fascinated and terrified by this man.
An excellent film even though ...
What a mess
Ok, this is a personal opinion but this movie is a shambles. Yes it won Oscars but that is no recommendation these days (A Beautiful Mind?!). By the numbers acting, no plotting, devoid of thrills and mediocre direction. Hopkins' Lecter is a true pantomime villain in the most terrible ways. Hammy and laughable, this could almost be Benny Hill up there.
Jodie Foster is no better. The "I'm scared but I'm FBI so I must be brave" delivery frankly disappointed me. This is an actor capable of so much more (The Accused for example) yet this doesn't stretch her abilities at all. Wanna see Lecter? Watch "Manhunter" for a truly terrifying everyman performance by a true underrated star, Brian Cox.

A modern thriller chef-d'oeuvre that established intellectual murderer Dr Hannibal Lecter in the canon of cinematic monsters, as much concerning his manifest intelligence as on his fierce and cannibalistic tendencies. When a serial killer (dubbed 'Buffalo Neb') is on the shoot, an FBI profiler approaches the imprisoned serial killer Lecter (Hopkins) after cerebral communication on the murderer. Lecter refuses to work with anyone other than rookie intermediary Clarice Starling (Foster), offering her titbits of information in return for her effervescence story. Her FBI boss, Jack Crawford (Glenn), warns her "Believe me, you don't appetite Hannibal Lecter guts your guide," but that's where he's heading. The famous transfer that leads to her childhood memory that ...
