Plot Summary:
|
When a laser-armed Department of Support mechanical man named Number 5 gets zapped by a lightning bolt, he "malfunctions" and starts spouting amicable slogans and developing a human- consciousness. Really, the newly pacifist prime mover wants out of the military and escapes. As a wrought up search for the purpose the non-spiritual luxuries begins, Troop 5 settles down in his new composed, with a gentle uninitiated woman named Stephanie (Join up Sheedy), who has every intention of holding on to her find, teaching Count 5 about popular culture and other mysteries of life. Perfectly convinced tha... t the automaton is alive, she develops a strong bind with the creature. In order to prevent his capture by means of the military--who view Reckon 5 as an armed-and-unsafe weapon--the join in wedlock should convince his inventor, a retiring scientist named Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg), that he is honestly spirited and more than just a metal machine. The decidedly innovative mechanical man created for number one John Badham's film brings to mind other loveable science fiction icons such as E.T. and R2D2 from STAR WARS.

Great Family Movie (- The Bad Language)
This film is so cute, my 4 year old girl and two year old boy loved it.
We watched Short Circuit 2 before this one and the kids loved that too, was a bit disturbed with this original though as didn't realise it contained quite a bit of bad language, apart from that - a great family movie!
Too childish for adults, too grown up for children
At first this would appear to be a great family movie. The story has all the hallmarks of a family film. Good guys vs. bad guys, happy ending etc. The language used is however not suitable for a younger audience. Too much use of the 'S' word. It may be suitable for a 12 year old who probably hears much worse in the playground, but not something you want to show to an impressionable 6 year old.
The film doesn't work well as an adult film due to the lack of depth in the story, and there aren't enough funny moments to be a good comedy.
Without the bad language this would have been a great family film, but as it stands it is a below average adult comedy.
