She's So Lovely
This mildly appealing tragi-comedy is more likely to be remembered as regards its queer genesis than for its value as a piece of cinema. Sometime actor Cassavetes picked up the screenplay his father John was working on at the time of his death and brought it to the paravent as a constant 'impersonation' of his primogenitor's directorial pizazz. Penn plays a troubled alcoholic released after a decade in a mental institution, who tries to pick up the pieces with his mate (Wright), only to discover that she has remarried in the interim, Joey (Travolta of all people). It's in effect outrageous to sit through the coat without wondering whether Cassavetes Sr would have approached the material from the for all that angle as his son, but its interference value is undeniable. ...
She's So Lovely
"...Penn shows he can do romantic comedy and ascetic theatre arts within a given tiny coat..."
She's So Lovely
"...[Penn's exhibit is] to the utmost of kindness and talent....[Travolta] appears at in a wink solid and airborne..."
