Plot Summary:
|
When Henry Dashwood dies unexpectedly, his estate must pass on past law to his son from his first association, John and helpmeet Fanny. But these circumstances renounce Mr. Dashwood's in circulation wife, and daughters Elinor, Marianne and Margaret, without a home and with barely enough money to live on. Though John and Fanny come by the family's vast belongings, it is Fanny's introverted, charming brother Edward who captures Elinor's heart. But previously Elinor and Edward have a chance to state their timid feelings by reason of each other, Fanny contrives an excuse to send Edward in error to... London. Marianne, meantime, becomes swept up in a zealous affair with the modish Willoughby, a very civil epic conducted with so brief cautiousness not later than Marianne that it earns her sister's disapproval. As Elinor and Marianne struggle to find romantic fulfillment in a society obsessed with pecuniary and social status, they must learn to combination quickness with sensibility in their dealings with both money and men.

Sense and Sensibility
Kate Winslet, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman are among a star-filled British cast in Ang Lee's Oscar-winning adaptation of the classic novel from Jane Austen
When Taiwanese director Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) began working with this quintessentially British cast he could barely string an English sentence together. However the result - like Eat, Drink, Man, Woman which came before, and The Ice Storm which came after - displays an acute sensitivity to mores, morals, customs and language, and benefits from a sharp, dryly comic script by Emma Thompson. (She won an Oscar in her capacity as screenwriter).
The story follows two sisters: practical Elinor (Thompson) and hopeless romantic Marianne (Winslet). Left penniles...
well-worth persevering with
This is essentially an Emma Thompson film; she wrote the script and plays one of the key characters. She does look a little old for the part whereas Kate Winslet looks just right. However, Emma Thompson has a fine touch with the dialogue and, anyway, she is a good actress with one of the friendliest faces in movies. Alan Rickman is simply excellent; he improves virtually any movie he's in. Hugh Grant is good without making a lasting impression - he's only on screen a short time compared to the others. The locations are good and overall you are likely to enjoy this film.
