Great old fashioned adventure lacking character
There is a distinct lack of family action films that have been released in the past few years. However, ?Sahara? makes the second one in a few months, the other being ?National Treasure?. Comparisons of these films to the Indy trilogy is obvious as they all feature treasure hunters.
In Sahara?s case it is Dirk Pitt an ex-navy man who now works privately to discover lost treasure. He is aided by is best friend Al, played by the excellent Steve Zahn, and on this adventure, a doctor who is seeking a cure for a plague (Cruz).
The film is set almost entirely in Africa so has a different feel to many recent action films. The set pieces are great fun and the chemistry between the two male leads is excellent. What lets the film down is the lack of character development and slow ...
Sahara
Matthew McConaughey stars as intrepid treasure seeker Dirk Pitt, whose obsession with a long-lost Civil War battleship takes him across west Africa and into a plot involving warlords and water pollution. Action adventure based on the books of Clive Cussler
Despite a variety of attempts, from Richard Linklater's The Newton Boys (1998) to submarine adventure U-571 (2000), the mantle of action hero has always eluded Matthew McConaughey. Playing Dirk Pitt, a daredevil Indiana Jones-alike hero, Sahara is his most concerted effort yet to stake this claim. Given that there are 14 books in the series by Clive Cussler, this is a potential franchise if ever there was one.
To be fair, McConaughey is good value as the character. Pitt is a good old-f...
Sahara
Claudia PuigSahara is an adventure story that plays out as dryly predictable as the desert's endless dunes.
It's as if director Breck Eisner (son of Disney chief Michael) realized two-thirds through that more excitement was needed and then ladled it on thick. The buddy action-adventure morphs into a disaster flick, and, just for kicks, both good and bad guys detonate as many explosions as might have gone off during a week of the Iraq war.
Reason and logic are blown away as well. Characters traverse the Sahara on foot for days and never seem to need a drop of water as they pull off amazing feats. They also happen upon a working pay phone after stumbling through miles of barren terrain.
But at least this movie has the sense to cast the goofy Steve Z...
Sahara
Despite a mixture of attempts, from Richard Linklater's The Newton Boys (1998) to submarine adventure U-571 (2000), the mantle of vitality hero has always eluded Matthew McConaughey. Playing Dirk Pitt, a daredevil Indiana Jones-alike hero, Sahara is his most concerted crack nevertheless to tether this claim. Preordained that there are 14 books in the series by Clive Cussler, this is a quiescent franchise if endlessly there was one. To be fair, McConaughey is good value as the nature. Pitt is a good Noachian-fashioned swashbuckler who doesn't feel the need to put to death every scene with a impertinent pay-postponed line and McConaughey manages to keep his acting the right-minded side of smug. Unfortunately the after all is said cannot be said in place of the f...
