Round Midnight
Tavernier's offbeat love letter to bebop gets the best jazz dim reward since Sven Klang's Combo. Night after night in...
Round Midnight
Single of the best jazz films ever made, this succeeds by melding French sensibilities there atmosphere with American sensibilities about the music. Tavernier's direction is constantly moody, from the streets of Paris to the smoky clubs, seedy hostels and even to the chic flats of the borough's inhabitants. The wonderfully voiced Gordon is an almost over-the-hill American jazzer, recovering from heroin addiction, maddening to start afresh in France. Although his expectations of pungency aren't much, he's rescued from blackness close to an fervid young supporter (Cluzet). Gordon's performance is a fancy of excellence and Hancock's goat picked up a well-deserved Oscar.
