Workmanlike action-thriller from John Frankenheimer. Stars Robert De Niro and Jean Reno. Who should have known better
De Niro's 90s tendency to phone in his performances continued with this pretentious and inept thriller which should please car chase aficionados but not many others.
A number of ronin (masterless samurai; including De Niro and Reno) are hired to retrieve a suitcase that is in danger of falling into the hands of the Ruskies. And this is about as exciting as the plot gets.
While the inevitable car-chases and shoot-outs are refreshingly old-fashioned, they soon outlast their welcome. To his credit Frankenheimer directs the material with the utmost sincerity. Although Ronin is co-written by David Mamet (credited as Richard Weitz...
Twists and turns - not only the cars!
Excellent film, I always reckon that DeNiro never makes a bad film.
Absorbing plot, incredible car chases, characters really come to life.
Great film.
