Plot Summary:
|
Rocky Balboa, heavyweight winner of the world, is the trainer for the purpose Apollo Credo in an exposition match against Ivan Drago, a "superman" boxer from the Soviet Joint. When Apollo is killed in the ring nigh the brutal Drago, Balboa blames himself and promises to avenge his friend's end in the ring.

After the compelling storytelling of the orginal Rocky, and the engaging early sequels, this is where Stallone's franchise hit the rails.
The first film was gritty, believable, with compelling human characters - not least Rocky Balboa's antagonist, Apollo Creed, a nemesis all the more engaging for having human weaknesses of his own. But Rocky IV squanders these assets in favour of a WWF-style exercise in vacuous, empty pugilism, tagged onto pathetically obvious USA V USSR fight scenario. Hadn't Hollywood heard of detente?

The first flick was gritty, believable, with compelling human characters - not least Flimsy Balboa's competitor, Apollo Doctrine, a nemesis all the more engaging in regard to having human weaknesses of his own. But Rocky IV squanders these assets in favour of a WWF-mode of expression exercise in vacuous, wild boxing, tagged onto pathetically obvious USA V USSR set-to structure.
