Plot Summary:
|
This unadorned biography of screenwriter Joe Orton (Gary Oldman) charts his lewd, dangerous relationships. Alfred Molina plays Orton's brutish lover, Kenneth Halliwell, a lamentable figure who becomes horrific and then tragic before the is over. The hilarity of scenes from such Orton plays as Loot and What the Butler Saw is evenly balanced past the bleakness of the playwright's tormented (and tormenting) away-dais existence, which ended suddenly at time 34 with half a dozen blows to the avert from a hammer. Prick Up Your Ears is based on the book by theater critic John Lahr, who is played i... n the film by Wallace Shawn.~ Hal Erickson, All Big Guide

Prick Up Your Ears
Artists have usually had a cardboard time of it on layer. What writers do is not cinematic, so Frears' film on Joe Orton...
Prick Up Your Ears
The exuberance of data gay British dramatist Joe Orton gets a tart, no-holds-barred, sure-handed telling by director Stephen Frears in this merry and telling biopic, with Gary Oldman giving a marvellous about as the higgledy-piggledy cheeky chappie. Alan Bennett's wonderful script is full of amusing everybody-liners, and is more attractive when focusing on what it meant to be homosexual in the 1960s to a certain extent than on Orton's lauded phony achievements. To this day, with Alfred Molina also a joy as his mistrusting lover, this is still British film-making at its finest.
