Prairie Home Companion, A
At the final broadcast of radio show 'A Prairie Home Companion', everyone is keen to give the beloved programme a good send-off. The last film directed by the late Robert Altman
It's rare for filmmakers to finish their careers on a high note. Alfred Hitchcock's last film was one of his worst, Family Plot (1976). Likewise, Kubrick closed the book with the nadir that was Eyes Wide Shut. As for Don Siegel and Sam Peckinpah, they bid au revoir with the inferior works Jinxed! (1982) and The Osterman Weekend respectively. The current generation of directors is not immune from this end-of-days disease either. Imagine if movie brats Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas and Brian De Palma fell off the twig tomo...
Never thought I?d say this : Give it a miss
I was seduced by all star cast, but was terribly disappointed. I wish I had some of these reviews at hand when I was watching it. My advice is: if you are still watching after 30 minutes and have a strong inclination to reach for the control DO IT! I waited very patiently for something to happen to the end, and was bitterly let down. Let down so much, that I feel compelled to write this review and warn everyone else! There is no story line! I agree with the comment of previous reviewer: I suppose the acting was good but watching a radio show being recorded isn't my idea of riveting entertainment.
Prairie Home Companion, A
Carina ChocanoThe end looms large in Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion, which nevertheless takes its sweet time saying goodbye. Written by Garrison Keillor, creator and host of the long-running public radio show, the movie is a pretty curious artifact ??? a retraction of a send-up, in which Keillor's mild, pleased-with-itself spoof of old-time radio variety shows is recast as an actual old-time radio variety show. The audience filling the Fitzgerald theater in St. Paul in the movie doesn't appear that different from the ones who might fill it in real life or who tune in from the coasts. But the performers on stage ??? including a hangdog emcee known as G.K. (Keillor) ??? don't exactly look like NPR coffee-mug types. Most of them are shucksy and woebegone for real.
