Peacemaker, The
Spy thriller that was the first feature film out of the newly formed Spielberg-headed DreamWorks studio. Borrowing very heavily from a standard James Bond plot of exotic locations and terrorist politics, Leder directs the action with a fury as US intelligence officer Devoe (Clooney) tries to track down some stolen nuclear missiles. With nuclear scientist Dr Kelly (Kidman) at his side, the pair race across Europe in pursuit of bitter Croatian terrorist Gavrich (Iures). Although fictional, Schiffer's screenplay was based on a magazine report on nuclear weapons smuggling in Russia.
Action packed stuff
Think James Bond with US cheese and a bit of Leathal Weapon thrown in for good measure and, as it was directed by a lady very stylish at times and a cut above the usual action adventure stuff enhanced by a yet again amazing soundtrack by Hans Zimmer.
A very enjoyable romp that makes you think after an hour what on earth else could happen in the second hour so much is happening. Clooney is very funny in his Bondesque tongue in cheek role and without that I would probably have given this film a 4 star rating. It is obvious that the actors enjoyed making this film and therefore the performances are all the more gripping if not self mocking at times. See it.
