Outlaw Josey Wales, The
Clint Eastwood is Josey Wales: army of one. He's tough, laconic and compelling as ever against a magnificently battered post American civil war backdrop
Clint Eastwood's best western as director until Unforgiven, which he took over from the leisurely Philip Kaufman during shooting.
It contains familiar Clint themes: a man (a farmer) isolated (his family has been butchered) and bent on revenge. Ruthless and devoid of surface emotion, there are shades of Dirty Harry in his self-imposed moral code, at odds with the lawlessness of the post-Civil War era. Clintwood's camerawork is solid and effective, trying out shaky handheld shots as a contrast to the usual array of panoramas. We even get a glimpse of his attitude to violence (inherent in his 1991 classic "Unforgiven") when the outlaw decides to hang up his gun: "I guess we all died a little in the...

Bloodthirsty actioner in the matchless's normal loam; favoured to prove unintentionally funny in regard to hardened addicts.
