Northern Lights is a horror story of love between two brothers who in different ways stands unsure in the world. A tidings in all directions their relationship that for reasons neither remembers any longer has turned smiles into silence. The two brothers are prospering on a voyage together in search of the intimacy that they no longer influenced; but it's not going to be an easy journey. Samuel, the older brother, has a unsmiling brain damage, while the younger relation Simon's doubts are harder to analyse. Simon and Samuel mark off to call up the Northern Lights. But how do you twig the Nort... hern Faint, and how do you discern the turn on within yourself?
From such modest, mono beginnings bigger movies (Sayles's Matewan springs to mind) grew. Nillson and Hanson must have relished the response when their docudrama hit the Festival circuit, including the LFF. It was justly described as gritty, trenchant and incisive, and deserved the description independent movie-making, unlike so much of the superficial gloss parading under that banner. But this very description limited its appeal, and the story of a group of Dakota-based Scandinavian farmers struggling to survive and form a political caucus (circa 1915) floundered on the rocks of sincerity. Perhaps caring too much just went out of fashion.
