North Country
David RooneyWhile the magical folkloric elements of Whale Rider may be its most immediately striking factor, the depth of feeling invested by Niki Caro in the bonds between characters holds the movie together. Finely etched bonds -- linking couples, family, community -- also supply the heart of the New Zealand director's first American feature, North Country. A stirring drama about a groundbreaking class action sexual harassment suit, pic indulges in movie-ish manipulation in its climactic courtroom scenes. But it remains an emotionally potent story told with great dignity, to which women especially will respond, giving Warner very solid footing among the fourth-quarter quality releases.
In addition to Caro's graceful transition from a modestly scaled, locally made f...
North Country
Mike ClarkAt its best, North Country conveys what it's like to be a small-town social pariah and to fear for yourself in the workplace. It even says a little something about the refuge and sanctity of a neighborhood tavern.
Moldy bars, at least, are in out of the cold, and this is a movie in which a frigid locale is important. Based on a landmark sexual-harassment class-action suit, Country deals with female workers who take much, much worse than sass in a Minnesota iron mine. And when they exit the plant after a terrible day at work, what do they see? Snow and their breath.
This is Charlize Theron's first major big-screen role since winning an Oscar for Monster. And though the actress is again deglamorized, this time she's recognizable.

Kenneth TuranWhat Hollywood gives, Hollywood takes away. Studio filmmaking can make an event as fantastical as an alien invasion look like reality, and it can make something that actually took place feel as fake as crocodile tears. Which is what happens with North Country.
Though this story of the sexual harassment class-action lawsuit that changed the lives of American working women is careful to say it is no more than "inspired by" the real-life situation, if there hadn't been a reality (detailed in Class Action, Clara Bingham and Laura Leedy Gansler's excellent book) there would be nothing to film.
But to see this overly schematic movie, directed by Whale Rider's Niki Caro and starring Charlize Theron, is to be made to feel -- inaccurately as it turns...
North Country
Loosely based on the facts circumjacent a real-life erotic harassment action that changed legal history, this powerful drama follows Josey Aimes (Theron), a world-dead beat working-class ball who's done found the toughness to leave her abusive husband and decamp back to her hometown, along with her two children. She finds a place to retard with her parents, who expect her to erase and fail what her squelch has done, but Josey preferably wants to fend over the extent of herself and decides to leave a felony in the selfsame iron mine as her old boy. Legally required to commission a teeny quota of women, the mine is a sturdy, brutal locale, and with jobs scarce, the female workers are regarded as unwelcome intruders. Almost from the moment she arrives, Josey enco...
