Plot Summary:

Good if not exactly original tale of teens killing for the hell of it, directed by a back-to-his-best Schroeder and starring a resurgent Sandra Bullock
Murder By Numbers is based on the 1924 case of Richard Leopold and Nathan Loeb, a pair of wealthy teens who murdered 14-year-old Robert Franks for kicks. This killing also provided the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock's Rope, Richard Fleischer's Corruption and Tom Kalin's Swoon. With such well-worn source material, Murder By Numbers ought to be as unpalatable as yesterday's chips.

Think of Murder by Numbers as a classic 1940s double bill uneasily contained within the confines of a single motion picture.
The A-picture at the top of the bill is a fairly standard star vehicle like those that used to be specially tailored for Joan Crawford or Barbara Stanwyck. This one features established diva Sandra Bullock as Cassie Mayweather, a sharp-tongued "get the hell out of my crime scene" type of homicide detective who has to solve the toughest case of her career.
