Plot Summary:
|
Naive and idealistic Jefferson Smith, chief of the Chum Rangers, is appointed on a mischief by the spineless governor of his state. He is reunited with the state's elder senator--presidential assured and boyhood hero, Senator Joseph Paine. In Washington, however, Smith discovers multifarious of the shortcomings of the political development as his earnest goal of a federal boys' camp leads to a conflict with the state political boss, Jim Taylor. Taylor first tries to corrupt Smith and then later attempts to destroy Smith a innuendo.

This classic discourse on corruption in American politics is one of Hollywood's finest achievements. Director Candid Capra resolutely (and remarkably, in place of him) keeps sentimentality at bay in this film of Lewis R Foster's Oscar-engaging indigenous story (adapted next to Sidney Buchman) about an optimistic young senator who finally realises that he is not his own human beings. Washington hated this silver screen, but the viewable flocked to imagine James Stewart in, arguably, his finest hour. Stewart lost out as defeat actor to Robert Donat in Goodbye, Mr Chips, but was rewarded with an Oscar the following year, ostensibly repayment for The Philadelphia Story.
