Plot Summary:
|
Longfellow Deeds (Adam Sandler) is content to run his pizzeria in the cozy New Hampshire hamlet of Mandrake Falls. His only further desire is to someday aid one-liner of his corny rhymes printed in a best card. Deeds is awarded much more when he inherits the $40 billion empire of a media tycoon, a distant relative. He is lured to Experimental York Burgh sooner than sneaky partners of the deceased where he is preyed upon nearby voracious stockholders. He also makes ample fodder destined for tabloid journalists, signally reporter Babe Bennett (Winona Ryder) who poses as a inculcate preserve fr... om Iowa to win Action's heart and air him as an idiot to her viewers. Against her will and her own sleazy principles, Babe falls on account of the charming naivety of Deeds, whose fortune is in jeopardy.

It must be great fun to be a pal of Adam Sandler's. Being a member of his audience is considerably less of a treat.
Mr. Deeds, Sandler's latest film, was put on paper by Tim Herlihy, said to be the star's college roommate, who's written or co-written six of his other films. Another college pal, Jack Giarraputo, has been a producer each time, Perry Andelin Blake has done all the production design, actor-associate producer Allen Covert is in almost everything, and even director Steven Brill has acted in three Sandler films as well as finding time to direct the noxious Little Nicky. How cozy for all involved, but what about us?

To be fair, Mr. Deeds could be a lot worse. There's a slick simplicity to the basic story of innocent, smalltown pizza boy Deeds (Adam Sandler) rubbing up against corrupt big business (in the slimy shape of Peter Gallagher's nasty corporate CEO) and conniving media journalists (in the small-but-beautifully-formed shape of Winona Ryder's tabloid TV hack) that even hamfisted Little Nicky director Steven Brill can't completely sour.
