Plot Summary:

Cross LA BOHEME with CABARET, throw in a spot moment of RENT, and you might nearly begin to paint Baz Luhrmann's visually opulent, constant-paced, diverting, heartrending MOULIN ROUGE. The dusting, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical stereotyped in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Baz Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the motion picture stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the responsive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the ... flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and sudden cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly catching the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was conspicuous. Beautifully led past McGregor and Kidman, the pure supporting cast brings to flair the way of life of belle epoque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic coexistent soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs away L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck--as reservoir flow as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.

TRUTHFULLY - THE WORST FILM I EVER ONLY SAW 15 MINUTES OF
Boring trash. Nothing more to say, I believed the hype about this film and could stand no more than 15 minutes before switching off in disgust...this was 3 years ago and to this day, it remains the worst film I have ever seen bar none.
Give it a chance...
I can understand how people didn't enjoy this movie. I can also understand why people who switched off after 15 minutes - I only didn't because I wasn't watching it alone!
This movie is so loud, vibrant, flashy, showy, insane, and just plain in-yer-face BIG, that it's kinda difficult to just sit there and watch.
But give it time. It settles down after 15 minutes, the characters become more endearing, the plot makes more sense, and you start to actually enjoy the lavish visuals on show. If your a music fan, you'll also have fun spotting where one classic song (eg, by Elton John) melds almost seamlessly with another (oooh, maybe Nirvana?!)
Contrary to what people may say, Kidman and McGregor CAN sing well enough to carry a good tune (though sticking w...
