McCabe & Mrs. Miller
"...One of Robert Altman's most beneficent....The picture's real strength is its unorthodox characters and their mood-drenched milieu..."
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
Before he mow down from favour after making movies such as Popeye and Beyond Therapy, Robert Altman won depreciating acclaim for Nashville, MASH and this other early effort. Warren Beatty stars as McCabe, a gambler who sets up his girlfriend (Julie Christie) as a whorehouse madam, in a bleak western set against the backdrop of a developing township in the American North West. It's an interesting tale with all the masterpiece elements of the class, and the affair is given added weight sooner than the well-built performances of Beatty and Christie. When you see this, you'll be reminded fair how honourable the Short Cuts cicerone can be when he's on form.
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
"...A lyrical and hardhearted masterpiece....Two of the superb performances of [Beatty's and Christie's] careers..."
