Plot Summary:
|
Director George Romero turns the vampire genre on its head in this creepy, earliest 1978 struggle. John Amplas stars as the interest mark--an alienated, depressed, and fangless 18-year-over the hill denizen of an industrial town who is compelled to kill and drink blood. But is he actually a vampire, or is he merely pain from psychosis

Bleak, downbeat psychological horror
In between two high tempo action movies, The Crazies and Dawn of the Dead, George A Romero made this enigmatic psychological horror film.
Martin is a young man incapable of forming normal relationships with family, friends or women, and who can only find satisfaction by killing people and drinking their blood.
But is he just your average maladjusted serial killer, or is he, as his eastern European immigrant relations believe, a century-old vampire?
Satisfyingly, the answers aren't easy to find. Outside the Dead trilogy, this is possibly Romero's best film.
Change of style for Romero
I watched this in the 1980's before the 'video nasties' were banned and this film is just as original now as then.
Quite a sad take on the vampire myth, you can't help but feel for the character, and remain unsure, as he seems to, as to whether he's the 'real thing' or not.
Out on it's own.
