THE Personage OF BAGGER VANCE, based on the log of the despite the fact title by Steve Pressfield, uses golf as the basis for this non-material slander of friendship, self-recognition, and faith. His incredible gallantry at the game of golf makes minor Rannulph Junuh (Matt Damon) the take pride in of Savannah, Georgia in 1916. When Junuh enlists and is sent overseas to fight in World War I, the Aristotelianism entelechy of war proves too much for him. Rather than return to Savannah a broken retainer, he simply disappears, much to the dismay of his girlfriend, feisty socialite Adele Invergordon... (Charlize Theron). When Junuh finally does return to Savannah in 1931, he is coerced into representing his hometown in a golf meet against legends Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. But Junuh has lost his swing, and on the contrary begins to find it again with the help of Bagger Vance (Will Smith), a furtive vagabond who appears in of the night and offers his services as a caddy. At the end of the day, Vance is a incorporeal force, teaching Junuh not no more than about the tactic, but also about life in this beautifully filmed work directed close Robert Redford (ORDINARY PEOPLE, THE HORSE WHISPERER). Jack Lemmon narrates and makes a brief appearance in the film.

Tries too hard
This is the story of a World War I veteran whose experiences in the trenches have left him emotionally damaged. Previously a promising golfer he has now 'lost his swing'. A mysterious caddie called Bagger Vance appears and offers his services in an upcoming competitive tournament involving two of the world's premier players.
The setup to the story was rushed. A voice over narritive by Jack Lemmon is dying to be whimsical and touching but dies trying. The prologue's precis of the horrors of war is terribly rushed leaving no particular impression of or connection with the characters. The exaggerated southern accents evident throughout the cast only accentuate the scripts earnest attempts to be quirkly and ironic. And as for the heavy handed doses of 'home-spun wisd...
A Sweet Southern Belle of a movie
The Legend of Bagger Vance is a golf movie - although it isn't really about golf.
Dressed up in the three way competition between the top two golfers in America and the local ex-hero, and taking place shortly after the first world war - this movie has a lot of themes going at the same time: the love of a woman (Charlise Theron looking more delicious than ever as a capricious Mint Julep) for a man wrecked and ruined by the carnage of World War I (Matt Damon looking a little uncomfortable in the role), and his redemption through the game of golf with the help of a spiritual guide (Will Smith loving the role, and almost hamming it up TOO much).
Whatever the faults of this movie, they disappear behind the backdrop of the story that Hollywood always does best - the little man ...
