Plot Summary:
|
While agony through the town of Bannock, a bunch of drunken, trail-weary cattlemen go overboard with their celebrating and accidentally waste an old man with a stray instantly. They return home to Sabbath unaware of his extinction. Bannock lawman Jered Maddox later arrives there to stall Harry interested on a charge of uxoricide. Sabbath is run alongside solid ground baron Vince Bronson, a well-wishing despot, who, upon hearing of the ruin, offers restitution seeking the incident. Maddox, yet, will not compromise even though feel put down ranchers Vern Adams are not in a position to desert t... heir responsibilities championing a dream of and protracted trial. Sabbath's marshal, Cotton Ryan, is an aging lawman whose hard-nosed ' standing rests on a set aside incident that occurred years before. Ryan admits to being only a hint of what he once was and no threat to stop Maddox. Maddox confides to Ryan that Bannock's legal methodology is wishy-washy and corrupt, and while he's doubtful that anyone he brings vanquish will suffer more than the price of a corrupt, he desire not be deterred in his unrelenting work of his burden. Initially Bronson appears willing to make concessions, but when his oldest soul mate Harvey Stenbaugh is killed after deliberately picking a duel with Maddox, Bronson digs in his heels with the rest of the village to resist the obdurate lawman.

Lawman
There was a brief period in Winner's directorial career when he achieved credibility by association with stars. This violent western is of that era. Lancaster plays a US marshal who rides into a town seeking six ranch-hands and their boss (Cobb), who have killed a man. The townspeople oppose him, and the aging sheriff (Ryan) is of little use. Still, a man's got to do whatever the script tells him. The result is a bloodbath, given a modicum of dignity by Lancaster and especially Ryan. The film is directed with an unerring eye for ugly camera angles and emphatic gracelessness.
