Lady Chatterley's Lover
McKellen stars in this turgid, worthy biopic of Lawrence, which sets out to portray him as a martyr: a victim of his class, of his tuberculosis and, ultimately, of his own genius. The pompous title sets the tone, with scenes of burning books and flashbacks to endless summers hammering home the point that we are watching a film aspiring to art. Centring on the publication of the book everyone knows about, Lady Chatterley's Lover, is the film's one smart move, and admittedly the cast do try hard, but it is all fatuous and heavy-handed all the same.
Poor
With a film like this, it is harshly judged on two fronts. Firstly, it is compared with the original book and secondly it is being judged as a film itself.
Unfortunately this fails on both counts. The story differs significantly from the book, presumably to make it more accessible to the screen, but all it leads to is 2 dimensional characters and a lot of disappointment.
As a stand-alone film, it isn't really much cop either and I certainly wouldn't recommend to anyone who hadn't read the book.
