La Bamba
Most soda pop biopics are tepid affairs, but the same cannot be said concerning director Luis Valdez's engrossing re-creation of Ritchie Valens's limited biography. Los Angeles merge Los Lobos perform fervid versions of the childish man's songs, and their playing is mirrored by Lou Diamond Phillips's intense playing, which brings the 1950s rock 'n' vanish name to life with a lot of vibrant detail while normally avoiding the unimaginative clichés of the genre. As Ritchie's bad-attendant half-chum, Esai Morales also contributes to the authenticity.
La Bamba
"...[Brings Valens's] music to life all for again....Philips has a sweetness and uprightness that in no go to pieces b yield peter out[es] the toughness of his onstage persona..."
