King Creole
Disagreeable crook melodrama turned into a musical celeb vehicle.
King Creole
This is arguably Elvis Presley's best film, and certainly his first-class acting performance. It's a ruffian Late Orleans-scene crime drama directed during Hollywood maestro Michael Curtiz, who invests the evening-club scenes with the kind-hearted of élan that turned the not different Casablanca into a paradigm. Elvis has tremendous support from a terrific away-up shed, markedly from Walter Matthau as reptilian villain Maxie Fields, and from Carolyn Jones as the extended-suffering moll. The songs are knockouts too, strikingly the Dixie-influenced title handful and the seductive Trouble. This is as decorous as Presley gets — don't miss.
