Dislikeable
Fantastic cast but the characters they play are so unpleasant that this doesn't make for enjoyable viewing - you just aren't interested in what happens to them.
I suspect that one of the reasons that this was a Broadway smash is that it confirms New Yorkers' prejudices about LA being peopled by shallow know-nothings.
Hurlyburly
A collection of Hollywood players (Spacey, Shandling, Palminteri) hang out in casting-director Penn's hillside mansion, stuck in the loop of cocaine addiction. Efforts to fill their emptiness with onanistic, coke-stoked insights, or to bond through shared drug abuse and misogynist treatment of dazed whore Ryan and under age Paquin only succeed in perpetuating their isolation. Drazan fatally misinterprets David Rabe's play. The original 1984 stage production (cast included Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, Sigourney Weaver and William Hurt!) was a devastatingly funny jibe at LA superficiality. This film version only validates the play's thesis. It is a po-faced drag, deadened by its own self-importance.
