House of Sand and Fog
Let House of Sand and Fog tell you a story. A story of hopes as evanescent as the drifting fog, of dreams as unreliable as a structure carelessly built out of sand.
It's a despairing narrative about the capacity we have to destroy our own lives just when we think we're doing the opposite, a story that uses exceptional acting to wrench and twist our emotions. It sends us back to words like tragedy and catharsis, because at its core this film has an inescapable, unflinching fidelity to human truth. It's a story that haunts long after it's seen, not just because we're overpowered by what happens to its characters but because, if we're honest, we see how all of it, even the worst of it, could happen to us.

Brilliant, but very upsetting.
This is an excellent film, very well acted, directed and written.
I think that the best way to watch this film is by thinking of it in terms of theatrical tragedy. Only drama can explore these deep emotions and not leave you feeling devastated. The problem here, is that the film is not a play and is so very believable.
However, in the dvd extras one of the actors commented that true tragedy only works if you are 100% immersed in the characters and the story. Therein lies the glory of this fantastic film.
Only please be warned, unless you are a cold emotional fish, this story will hit you hard!! Enjoy.
House of Sand and Fog
Two dreams collide ? that of a recovering alcoholic with an emotional attachment to her parents' home, and an settler hoping to recover the good life ? in an engrossing, well-acted theatre arts that is unbuttoned by its sensational progress.
House of Sand and Fog
If 'stroke-good' movies lift the spirits, what faultlessly is the tempt of 'fancy-bad' movies? Catharsis? Double that our lives aren't as vomit-provoking as the misfortune onscreen? Just as special effects extravaganzas constantly up the ante on ever more elaborate spectacle, downbeat films compete to successively reduce depths ("I see your Mystic River, and move you a 21 Grams"). In more ways than it intends, House Of Sand And Fog hits lull bottom. Stung for not paying a province that she doesn't be beholden to because of, cloistered, unemployed Kathy Niccolo (Connelly) is promptly calculated incorrect of her home. The property is when snapped up at a negotiate price by way of an individual Colonel Behrani (Kingsley), an ex-soldier of the Shah reduced to wo...
