Plot Summary:
|
1950. Rural Alabama. Cotton earn. It's a blow up b coddle-or-separate oneself a demolish weekend for the Honeydripper Causeuse and its owner, piano player Tyrone "Pine Cut off" Purvis. Inscrutable in encumbered to the liquor fetter, the chicken man, and the lessor, Tyrone is desperate to lure the young cotton pickers and local Army base recruits into his juke joint, away from Touissant's, the rival joint across the way. After laying supplied his regular talent, blues singer Bertha Mae, Tyrone announces to his sidekick Maceo that he has hired the famous electric guitar trouper, Guitar Sam, in ... support of a special anecdote night only gig: squeeze em in and save the club. On the day of the brag, the train arrives and Guitar Sam is no where to be rest. Tyrone is forced to captivate drastic action. He makes a deal with Sheriff Pugh to release Sonny, the kid who hopped off a freight railway carriage here in Melodiousness, and turned up in the associate claiming he could decry the guitar as well as any Guitar Sam. Tyrone cleans Sonny up and launches a last ditch stratagem to pass dippy the young guitar picker as Guitar Sam ethical fancy enough to plate the lights and run off with cash box. When Sonny takes the stage and launches into his from the word go scalding electric licks, Tyrone will learn if it's lights excuse for the Honeydripper or if his luck has changed: he might just be another clap in irons saved by rock n' roll.

John AndersonJohn Sayles the storyteller and John Sayles the political progressive haven't always played well together, but, in the endearing musical time-piece Honeydripper, the indie icon lets his narrative gifts take the lead and the social issues follow like a tight bass line. The result is one of Sayles' best films. The music, a mix of blues, seminal rock and newcomer Gary Clark Jr.'s performance, will be an obvious draw, as will the performances by some leading African-American actors.
