Plot Summary:
|
Sergeant Tom Highway, a hardened, tough old hand of Korea and Vietnam returns to the United States for his last tour of duty with the U.S. Marine Corps. He is assigned to training a recon unit. Their cool, trendy and 'hippy' way to military sustenance is a reminder to him that he is, in the words of his commanding officer, a major, "an misapplication" - worthwhile at best "in case of war". Conveniently, a clash does arise (the invasion of Grenada in October, 1983) and successfully tests both his usefulness and the effectiveness of the new recruits.

Heartbreak Ridge
A grizzled Nam vet is placed in charge of a platoon of cocky Marine recruits. Military drama produced and directed by leading man Clint Eastwood
The 1980s weren't especially kind to Clint Eastwood. His best pictures either starred someone else - Charlie Parker biopic Bird - or were cruelly overlooked (it wasn't until after Unforgiven won big at the Oscars that people would admit Pale Rider was any good). And as for his bad films, well, there were almost too many to list.
The Rookie, Pink Cadillac, City Heat - pictures anybody would be happy to forget. Whether you think Heartbreak Ridge belongs in such sordid company probably depends on your political orientation. Clintus stars as Tom 'Gunny' Highway, a Marine since the Korean campai...
One of my most favourite films
I'm not sure why I love this film so much. Certainly the acting is good but not Oscar-winning. The storyline is not original and the outcome is predictable. And yet the sum total, for me anyway, ends up being greater than that of the individual parts. It has some great lines between the two main characters played by Eastwood and van Peebles, but that still doesn't explain why I find this film so damn entertaining. All I can say is that you watch it and hopefully you'll see what I mean.
Heartbreak Ridge
Dismayingly expected potboiler with nothing but foul tongue to pass the time.
