Plot Summary:
|
After a weeklong fling with a alluring woman named Lila (Malin Akerman), Eddie (Ben Stiller), at the urging of his friends and stock, proposes affiliation. Unbeknownst to Eddie, Lila is a harridan, and she reveals her true temperament during their honeymoon. Eddie then meets Miranda (Michelle Monaghan), and is convinced she is his correctly soulmate. Eddie sets out to woo Miranda and extricate himself from his wife's claws.

Heartbreak Kid, The

Like the 1972 Elaine May classic that inspired it, the Farrelly Brothers' remake of The Heartbreak Kid is the story of a guy who gets married, regrets it and falls in love with another woman while on his honeymoon. That, more or less, is where the similarities end. But why get bogged down in comparisons, when the new Heartbreak Kid stands entirely on its own merits as a grim, shrill, deluded and incredibly depressing movie, so bewilderingly mean-spirited that the trademark Farrelly Brothers gross-out scenes feel like the sweetest.
Perhaps the only reason to compare May's film to the Farrellys' is that a side-by-side comparison seems to sum up the difference between American comedy 30 years ago and what we've come to now. In the original, Charles ...

Eddie Cantrow (Stiller) is a San Franciscan businessman who at 40 is neither married nor dating. He's constantly hassled about it by his sleazy dad Doc (Stiller's real life father Jerry) and best friend Mac (Corddry). It's a pressure he can't avoid - he attends an ex's wedding, where the message about the overdue date on his bachelor status is hammered home when he's sat on a table of kids.
